Azotobakterīns bagātina augsni ar slāpekli un uzlabo augsnes auglību, fiksē atmosfēras slāpekli, nodrošina tā pieejamību augiem, paātrina augu sakņu un stublāju augšanu, veicina zaļās masas veidošanos. Mēslojums palielina augu imunitāti un ziemcietību.

Ar azobakterīnu saprot mikrobioloģisku mēslojumu, kas satur vienu vai varāku azotobacter sp sugu mikroorganismus, kas aktīvi piedalās slāpekļa parvērtību procesos. Preperāta baktērijas brīvi dzīvo augsnē , saista atmosfērās slāpekli un pārvērš to augiem izmantojamos savienojumos (var piesaitīt aptuveni 20-40kg/ha slāpekli). Veicina augu augšanu un augiem labvēlīgu mikroorganismu attīstību rizosfērā, ierobežo patogēno mikrobu un sēņu attīstību augsnē un uz augiem, kā arī uzlabo augsni kā rezultātā var palielināt  ražas apjomu  pat līdz 20%
